Having always been keen on art and cooking as a girl, Katherine spent 3 months soon after leaving school on a Cordon-bleu cookery training course. After this she seriously considered a career in cake decorating, but instead went to art college. However, while at college, she had the opportunity to be the cook in a private chalet during the Yehudi Menuhin summer music festivals in Gstaad, Switzerland and enjoyed returning to this post for 5 consecutive summers, cooking for many of the musicians attending the festival, some of whom were famous then and some are famous now! After gaining a Masters Degree in woven textiles at The Royal College of Art, she spent 15 years working as a freelance textile designer. Since moving to Scotland her life has come full circle. She is again pursuing her former loves - baking cakes, and working as an artist, painting pictures. (Gallery of paintings and web site on www.katherinecowtan.co.uk)
These previous experiences, as cook, craftsperson, designer, artist and also mother (creating extraordinary birthday cakes each year for her children), provided the right background for her current business. Some of her recipes are drawn directly from Cordon Bleu and other recipe books, and others from old relatives or friends. Her cake recipes especially are tried, tested, tasted (the children’s friends and neighbours loved helping with the tastings!) adjusted and may be ‘re-designed’ many times, before they are considered delicious enough to be offered for sale. Decorating cakes, whether for a birthday, local charity fund raising event or other celebration is a welcome excuse for her to exercise her creativity.
She feels it is a privilege that she can enjoy making a product/ things, which put a smile on people’s faces and give so much pleasure.
